Facilitated by Bruce Cook, Senior Kickologist at www.kickbike.com.au
Come and check out “that kicking thing” that Jo does as her preferred exercise. It’s the best fun that an adult – and a child – can have on 2 wheels and it’s sooo good for you!
Kickbike is Jo’s preferred brand of footbike and it is a perfect low-impact fitness tool that strengthens your core in a similar way to pilates. They were developed by the Nordic cross-country skiers to maintain fitness during the summer and in Australia have been used for cross-training by many sporting teams including the Brisbane Lions, West Coast Eagles and Gold Coast Suns. They are especially useful when athletes and other fitness enthusiasts are recovering from injury or over-training. The wide bike-like tyres and upright riding style make it safer than a standard scooter.
Previously Jo wouldn’t have described herself as “sporty”. Healthy but not sporty.
About 12 years ago she met Bruce Cook at a business networking event, learned that Kickbike were introducing a kid’s version and bought one for her then 11 year old son. He excelled at kicking – later becoming a world champion – and in 2010 Jo thought she’d give it a try herself.
She’d finally found an exercise regime that suited her. Kicking is great for cardio, core and lower body strength without heavy impact. It gives your upper body strength too: people sometimes comment on Jo’s arms and back saying things like “when did you start going to the gym?” and that’s just from holding the handlebars! She’s even competed at the Footbike World Championships in Germany in 2012 and Australia in 2016. The idea of being a competitive athlete was not previously on Jo’s goal list but it just shows what can happen when you try something new… And once she’d done that she did put a kicking goal on the list: to kick 100 km in one go, which she achieved in September 2017.
So, join Jo and Bruce for a gentle kick around a closed criterium (bicycle) circuit before a meander along the cycle path next to Kedron Brook through the wetlands near Toombul.
We’ll meet in the gazebo area of Albert Bishop Park at Nundah, have an instructional and safety briefing then kick around the track before going along the wetlands bike path which is flat at that point. It’s a great way to experience our great outdoors: fresh air and water.
Upon returning to the gazebo we’ll share some stories over refreshments.
If you’d like to see some kicking, check out this video. I probably don’t need any introduction but if you’re wondering, yes that is me with the pink top!
We’ll have everything you need including a helmet and water. If you’d like to bring your own helmet and/or gloves you are most welcome to do so.
